Personality: Okita Sougo is a sadist. This one sentence alone sums up the whole of what he is -- especially considering Gintama isn't really an anime with too much character depth. So 90% of the time, he is a sadist -- meaning, he takes pleasure in causing others pain, slaughters his own teammates without remorse, and especially enjoys causing the suffering of one vice commander of the Shinsengumi -- Hijikata Toshirou. He will break rules where he can and blame the results on others. He's reckless and will blow up buildings, not caring about the casualties standing between him and his desired target. Well, he does this approximately 40% of the time. 50% is spent sleeping, taking unauthorized vacations, lazing around, and ultimately not doing his job. And as you can guess, that lousy 10% is saved for witty one-liners.
But when you take the crack part of the anime out of his personality, Sougo slowly becomes a realistic character -- exaggerated realism but still... a little more fleshed out. He's capable of love and he's capable of respect, though he keeps himself guarded and distant most of the time. He's stubborn and refuses to rely on others. He's prideful, never liking to admit when he's wrong. Caring about people is rare, and there are only about three people he considers friends. But to those who have managed to get past his walls, Sougo is loyal to a fault. With this loyalty, however, he has been shown to be extremely jealous and petty when anything threatens his relationship with those he cares about.
The primary example of this would be Hijikata. When Sougo was young, his parents had died and he only had his older sister to rely on. She spoiled him rotten and he absolutely adored her. Sometime in his youth, he also met Kondo Isao (the would-be commander of the Shinsengumi.) He respected the man and loved learning how to fight with him. But then, like a dark cloud, Hijikata entered the picture. In Sougo's eyes, it seemed that Kondo started paying more attention to Hijikata. This, coupled by his sister having feelings for Hijikata caused Sougo to resent him. It's a feeling he has carried with him for years, constantly being a thorn in Hijikata's side when he could. Though even in spite of his envy, there is a part of him that does respect Hijikata and considers him a friend. When it has mattered most, Sougo has stood by his side and fought with him. It's just that emotions are so complicated. :P It's easier to be comic relief!
And getting back to that comic relief, he is the trolliest of trolls. Sougo is often rude or blunt with most everyone while maintaining a very monotone voice. It is like 99.999999% impossible to tell whether he's joking or serious a good majority of the time, and he never seems to break face -- beyond sadistic smiles when he's about to hurt someone. He cares very little about offending people and maintains a very blase attitude. It takes a lot to get a reaction out of him. BUT at the same time, he can be very childlike. He has been shown playing kid's games (like beetle wrestling) or shirking his responsibilities in order to play carnival games.
Underneath it all, though, he DOES have a sense of justice. Albeit warped (Sougo is a very ends justify the means sort of guy). But when it matters most, he will fight and lay down his life for what he believes is right.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Oh, it'll be easy because he probably won't be trying too hard to be redeemed anyway, haha. But laziness is definitely a weakness of his. If given the chance to either work or take a nap for the whole day, he will definitely choose the latter. He's also a sucker for things that look like fun -- games, competitions, etc. Even if those things are a little seedy and questionable, he won't be able to resist taking part.
Sins: murder, sloth, pride, envy, abuse of power, abusing authorities, sadism, apathy toward lives of others, disrespecting women, lying, stealing, selfishness, pettiness.
Powers/Abilities: Sougo doesn't have what would be considered 'abnormal' abilities, but he does seem to be a little bit more hardy than the average person. He's gone toe to toe with some super powered aliens and come out of it alive. He's an extremely skilled swordsman (it's often said he's the best within the Shinsengumi), and very adept with firearms as well (a bazooka is one of his favorite go-to weapons much to the dismay of the city!) But while he is considered a 'normal' swordsman, he does adhere to anime physics where it is possible to slice a car in half with a sword. So some of what he can do could be considered a bit inhuman.
Items: Shinsengumi uniform, sleep mask, his sword (capable of playing MP3s. Gintama is weird.), earbuds, and a pair of handcuffs.
